Chapter 14, The Giver
By kimj, Updated
Jonas experiences real pain and learns that his life is nothing without emotions and he also finds out that there are secrets in his own community that he doesn't know.
After experiencing many pleasant memories about love and joy from the life before the community (colour), the giver decides that it is time to show Jonas the pain of the real world, through the memory of war.
Jonas is distressed after receiving the memory of war, where he experiences physical and emotional pain; this, Jonas thought was the indescribable pain the chief elder was talking about.
Jonas came home after training and asked his parents if they 'loved him'. His parents looked back at him confused and reminded him that the word love is too general. They suggested that he used the word 'enjoyed' instead.
That night Jonas volunteered to have Gabe, the baby that his father was looking after, in his room. He remembered that the day before, he saw the depth in Gabe's eyes , just like himself. Gabe also has the same birth mark that the receivers had.
For the last week, Jonas attempted to pass on some of the wonderful memories to the people around him, but he just couldn't transfer them. So after trying to calm Gabriel down unsuccessfully Jonas transferred his first memory to the baby.
Then Gabe was able to see the boat drifting off into the sunset before him and Jonas both fell soundly asleep.
