Up until this day, Jonas had only received pleasant memories, however The Giver decided that he was ready for the burden of pain as well, Jonas had never felt real pain before and did not ant to return after his first experience with pain. (152)

Jonas learns about grandparents through a memory of Christmas, and he asks The Giver who his grandparents are, and where he might find them. The Giver then explains to Jonas that in their community, families do not work that way, and that Jonas's grandparents wouldn't really have anything to do with him. (156)
Jonas received a memory of Christmas, a holiday from long ago. With this memory he learned of grandparents, and love, two completely foreign concepts to him. (157)
Jonas takes his new found knowledge of the emotion of love and asks his parents if they love him. Their answer? "Precision of language Jonas!" (159-160)
Do they love me?
Jonas's father tells Jonas about how babies get released, however, Jonas finds out later that hat his father tells him is not the whole truth. (171)
Then I wave bye-bye!
People felt things once Jonas.
The Giver explains to Jonas that everyone felt emotions a long time ago, an that they could again, if they figure out a plan on how to release the memories.
