Lennie and George, filled with hope, both talk about the American Dream before working in the ranch.
Lennie and George are then interviewed by the boss. The boss is suspicious as to why George is answering all questions for Lennie, and he replies with a lie. "He's my... cousin. I told his old lady I'd take care of him. He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid. He's awright. Just ain't bright. But he can do anything you tell him." They get the job.
Lennie and George meet Slim, the god-like leader, and his team.
