  • SPEAK Laurie Halse Andeson 1999 Kayla Kurtz English 10 4t hour
  • Setting
  • Birth origin
  • Heros flaw
  • In my story it starts of with the setting in school with the main character being an outcast no one talking to her, or taking any interest in her. She goes too merryweather highschool, as a freshman. All the clicks and clans Are together leaving Melinda with no on at all. She goes to school the first day and sees, "We fall into clans: Jocks, Country Clubbers, Idiot Savants, Cheerleaders, Human Waste, Eurotrash, Future Fascists of America, Big Hair Chix, the Marthas, Suffering Artists, Thespians, Goths, Shredders. I am clanless." from "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson. She knows she is going to struggle to fit in and does not want to be at school, she does not go to class on time, nor does she really care that she is late. Melinda is bullied made fun of and left out by her old friends, she is even mad a food plate on the first day when she gets food thrown on her, and very one laughs.
  • Antagonist
  • Melinda; dont let heather hear you cry it will be okay you are alone and thats fine.
  • The protagonist in my story is, Melinda she is a little lost right now doesn't know where she fits in or that she deserves to fit in. During the summer Melinda was at a party that she got lots of people in trouble but she was forced to call there police for Avery good reason, that has not bee said yet. Melinda has seven been teased about it, "“My brother got arrested at that party. He got fired because of the arrest. I can’t believe you did that. Asshole.” You don’t understand, my headvoice answers. Too bad she can’t hear it. My throat squeezes shut, as if two hands of black fingernails are clamped on my windpipe. I have worked so hard to forget every second of that stupid party, and here I am in the middle of a hostile crowd that hates me for what I had to do. I can’t tell them what really happened. I can’t even look at that part myself. An animal noise rustles in my stomach." Melinda's old friends do not even talk to her because of this and I believe Melinda is way different because of this past it changed her and I believe it is still changing her, and I think in the long run it will make her a better person.
  • People have feelings, even the people who seem the most tough.
  • Melinda is struggling with confidence and how she thinks of herself. She. Thinks she. Is a loser and a nobody, that she has done something wrong. She. Truly believes she does not fit in anywhere, and does not belong. On the first day of school Melinda says to herself, "I see a few friends—people I used to think were my friends-but they look away." Melinda is struggling with self confidence. Melinda is also having troubles with her old friends from school. They are being rude to her, making fun of her clothes, completely ignoring her, and bulling her at school because of something that happened at a party over the summer. I think thought the story Melinda will have to learn how to stand up o her old friends, and to do that she will have to gain self confidence and care more about herself and beehive in herself much more.
  • The antagonist in the story so far is the bulling. The people who cause harm to Others through words or just hateful actions, like Melinda's Ex friends. They treat her like dirt for something, that we do not even know yet. Melinda has to live with everyone treating her like she is the worst person alive, it even makes Melinda believe it about herself. "I hide in the bathroom until I know Heather’s bus has left. The salt in my tears feels good when it stings my lips. I wash my face in the sink until there is nothing left of it, no eyes, no nose, no mouth. A slick nothing." The antagonist is everyone in Melinda's life that treats her like dirt and herself believing in them.
  • Heather thinks to herself; I like her but I dont want to ruin my chances of being in this group of friends.
  • Who is that girl she is weird.
  • BE KIND, YOUR WORDS MATTER
  • Words and actions hurt!
