Jocasta and King Laius had a baby. Jocasta knew about the infant's prophecy of killing the father and ordered the Sheppard to kill the baby.
The people of Thebes are getting very ill and dying. The gods say its because of "pollution" in the city. This stain the murderer of King Laius.
Oedipus confesses to murdering an old man years ago. This took place where two roads cross. (Also where Laius was killed.) He now starts to question the prophecy.
"You, you'll see no more the pain I suffered, all the pain I caused! Too long you looked on the ones you never should have seen, blind to the ones you longed to see, to know! Blind from this hour on! Blind in the darkness-blind!"
The messenger informs Oedipus and Jocasta that Polybus has passed away due to illness and old age. They both were relieved thinking the prophecy wasn't true.
The Sheppard confesses to giving the baby away rather than killing it. Jocasta and Oedipus realize the connection, The baby was Oedipus and the prophecy and Tiresias were right all along.
Hearing the news, Jocasta becomes very upset and takes her own life. Oedipus being so disgusted and upset with his actions, stabs his eyes out to take away sight of such disgust.
