In this scene news reporters are attempting to get a scoop on the recent occurrences in the Dalton house hold. Britten tells them they should leave and aren't going to get to speak to Mr. Dalton. Still they press.
Mr. Dalton comes out with Mrs. Dalton and allows a few questions, he even reads off the ransom note. He warns the press not to publish this in fear his daughter will be killed.
Mr. and Mrs. Dalton leave the room worried, and worn out. Britten decides to allow the press to see Mary's room, and leads them upstairs.
While everyone is gone, Bigger decides to take the opportunity to read the newspaper that had been thrown to the floor. It's a statement from Jan, he begins to worry that its possible that Jan could prove he's innocent.
The group comes back, and Peggy comes in telling him to clean out the ashes in the furnace so that the house will heat up. Bigger is hesitant knowing that bones may be made visible. In his attempts to keep the bones hidden he causes smoke to fill the room.
Once smoke has erupted into the room the men in attempts to assist Bigger, caused some of the ashes to fall on the floor. They noticed the bone and discovered it was the girls. In a panic Bigger fled the house, and went to Bessie to seek refuge.
