  • I, too am America We are all the same, no discrimination.

  • Segregation takes place because of social status and color of skin. The person getting down graded refuses to accept it will continue and embraces the changes that can be changed.
  • S-Shift
  • metaphor: "I am the darker brother" means he is referring to himself as African American. symbolism: When they send him away it shows they don't think he deserves to be seen with them.
  • T-theme
  • The character is hopeful that the people that discriminate will see that they are all the same and need to be treated equally.
  • first stanza: "But I laugh" shows the character is confident that the people that discriminate will see that they are all the same and should be treated equally. In the end the attitude is quite sinister in my opinion for the character is wishing they will pay for what they have done.
  • Equality is essential to harmony because people are all the same and need to be treated equally.
