Darrow is challenged to a game by the sovereign. She has a monster of half scorpion, half pitviper coil itself around the wrist of both of them, and they take turns asking questions. The snakes sense body heat and are trained to bite when they sense that a lie is told.
When Darrow finds out that Dancer is dead, he is convinced to go to his auction with a bomb and the intention of blowing himself up along with all the people of power attending.
Once Darrow's decision is made to bomb his auction, he drugs Roque to make sure that he is not at the auction during the time he is going to do it.
The blood feud between Cassius and Darrow causes a duel to occur between the two. Darrow defeats Cassius to the surprise of everyone in attendance, but he is kept from killing him by the sovereign.
Darrow takes a big risk in order to get him and his friends out of the sovereigns grasp. He takes her grandson hostage, threatening to kill him if he is not allowed to leave. He knows he won kill the child regardless of what happens, but he is he hopes his reputation as a killer is enough to convince the sovereign to give him what he wants
Once Darrow defeats Cassius, a fight breaks out. Through the chaos, he meets eyes with the jackal. It is at this moment that he realizes he made a mistake by agreeing to an alliance with him.
