  • "There's some folks who don't eat like us, but you ain't called on to contradict 'em"
  • "He ain't company Cal, he's just a Cunningham"

  • "For a number of reasons, the main one is if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town."
  • Scout's teacher shouts at her when realizing she knows how to read when really the situation they are in is quite ironic and being able to read would help her further in life.
  • Striving to do what is best permits compassion and comprehension whereas doing the opposite prohibits the ability to develop as a person.
  • Calpurnia's moral lesson here is to respect others differences even if you think you are better than them and acting like you are better is the best way to show that you are not.
  • Atticus says you should judge yourself before others and his self-respect is bound with good morals which pushes him to get involved with the case even though he knows it could be dangerous.
