  • We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
  • The U.S. Constitution The constitution is a document of the rules we need to follow in the United States. It was ratified in June 21, 1788 .
  • The articles of confederation The first American Constitution. They were ratified (approved) in 1781, and were in effect during the Revolution.
  • The Amendments An amendment is a formal written change to a document, such as the Constitution. There are 27 amendments. A constitution can be amended by 1. 2/3 vote of both houses of Congress 2. Approval of 3/4 of the states legislatures
  • Definition of freedom-the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint Ex. of amendments- 1st admt-Protects our freedom of speech, press, assembly, petition, and religion. 4th admt-Protects the people from "unreasonable" searches. Police must have a warrant. 8th admt-Prohibits "cruel and unusual punishment."
  • Bill of rights Definition-The first ten amendments to the Constitution. Ratified-1791 What does it do?-It protects the right of the people.

  • The three branches of government Legislative-write the laws Executive-Executes the law Judicial-
  • The Process of Laws 1. Bill must first be approved by a majority of both houses of Congress 2. Must not be vetoed (by the Pres.) What happens when a law is vetoed-The Congress can override that veto with a vote of 2/3 of both houses. Definition of law-a rule you must follow
