What is our identity???
Before the Anschluss, the Austrian economy was collapsing while social distress was growing. The working class began supporting socialism as unemployment rates were sky-rocketing.
After the Anschluss, the Nazi administration in Austria focused on stimulating the economy in order to win popular support. By early 1939, unemployment was falling rapidly in Austria. New policies created to speed integration with Germany led to the rise of large firms. The economy became modernized and diversified.
The little independent identity and national unity that Austria had continued to be repressed under Hitler. The name Austria became banned and provincial loyalty and identification were cultivated. This lack of identity continued to intensify after the Anschluss.
