Storyboard Text

  • In 1764, Parliament raised the tax on molasses because they were in debt. This was called the Sugar Act. Colonists were not happy with The Sugar Act. They smuggled goods into the country to buy and sell for a lower price. Parliament found out and lowered the taxes so their items would be bought.
  • I will smuggle it.
  • Around the same time as the Stamp Act, another act was passed called the Quartering Act. It forced colonists to house British soldiers and pay for their things, which meant spending more. The cause of this act was because Britain couldn't pay for soldiers housing and so they could keep an eye on the colonists. This act was super UNFAIR. Colonists had to house soldiers against their will! Colonists got mad, and refused to purchase British items.
  • It is unfair that the soldiers have to stay here and we have to waste money!
  • In they year of 1770, the Boston Massacre happened. There was tension because of the dumb Townshend Acts. On March 5th, colonists began to riot and taunted the British soldiers. The "lobsterbacks" shot into the crowd and killed 5 innocent colonists. News spread around quick and soon everyone was against the British. As a result, they removed all tax besides the tea tax.
  • FIRE!!!
  • A few years after the massacre in Boston, the Tea Act was passed. This lowered the tax of tea so colonists wouldn't smuggle anymore and so Britain could gain money. After the tax lowered, colonists feared a monopoly on tea. They boycotted and threatened ports that would bring in tea, which lead to the brilliant Boston Tea Party.
  • In the hectic year of 1773, the Boston Tea Party occurred. The colonists were upset about the unfair Tea Act, so they dressed as Native Americans and went to the harbor. They climbed aboard a ship with tea on it, and dumped it all into the harbor. Britain was furious and cast very bad laws called the Intolerable Acts. They forbid Boston from doing many things. The colonies were getting more and more annoyed by the British, something had to happen!
  • In 1776 the colonies FINALLY decided to break away from the hectic British and start their own country. They wrote the "Declaration of Independence" and broke away from Britain because of their unfair laws and acts. They called the country America!
