Storyboard Text

  • After Justin, Justinian's uncle, became emperor, Justinian became the highest ranking official in his uncles government. Then, in 527, Justin made Justinian his associate, and they ruled together.
  • Later on in that same year, Justin died, so Justinian became sole ruler of the empire. He decided not to lead alone. So in 523, Justinian married Theodora, a former actress.
  • Because Justinian's military kept on winning its battles, it all came at a price. Justinian's military campaigns eventually weakened the empires economy.
  • Although Justinian died in 565, his code continued on for years.
  • Even though Justinian died, his buildings were so popular. Some of them were the the El Aqso and the Hagia Sophia.
  • Later on, the rioters accused the government of using harsh tactics to put down an earlier uprising by sporting fans. The protesters eventually crowed inside the Hippodrome stadium and claimed a new emperor.
