In the beginning of the book we meet Hazel Grace Lancaster, and get the gist of life of a kid with cancer, which includes protective parents, support groups and breathing tanks named Phillip.
Then Hazel meets Augustus "Gus" Waters, a former basketball player who lost a leg to cancer, at her support group. Support Group
They bond over reading each others favorite books and playing video games with mutual friend Isaac.
Hazel and Gus go to Amsterdam to meet Hazel's favorite author Van Houten who turns out to be a low life alcoholic. Gus reveals to Hazel his cancer has spread.
Hazel, Isaac, and Gus have a prefuneral for Gus. Hazel asks Gus to write her eulogy. He refuses. A few days later, he dies.
Hazel goes to Gus's actual funeral. Van Houten shows up and reveals a letter from Gus to him, asking him to write Hazel's eulogy. The book ends with the end of his letter.
