Ruby Bridges was born on September 8th, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. She grew up on the farm her family sharecropped. They went to church every Sunday and barely made it even with both of Ruby's parents working.
Ruby attended an all-black school farther from her home than the whites-only elementary school. She was chosen by the NAACP to take a test to let her go to the white school and was the only one that passed.
The first day Ruby went to the new school, she was met by angry crowds of people who refused to send their children to school with a black girl. Armed federal marshals escorted her by order of President Eisenhower.
