On May 7, 1915 a U-boat sank the British liner Lusitania without warning. Among the 1,198 dead were 128 Americans. President Theodore Roosevelt denounced Germany's actions as "murder on the high seas."
In 1914, during a visit to Sarajevo, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were gunned down by a terrorist. A few years earlier Angered Bosnians by Austria-Hungary, a move that many Bosnians who wanted closer ties to nearby Serbia and other Slavic ethnic groups. Within weeks of Archdukes assassination Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
Britian had gotten hold of a note sent in code by German foreign minister, Arthur Zimmerman, to the German minister in Mexico. Zimmerman suggested that if the United States entered the war, Mexico and Germany should become allies. The Zimmerman note created a sensation in the United States and stirred anti-German feeling across the nation.
