Portia is not happy that she cannot choose her husband due to her father's will and is not pleased with any of her suitors, except Bassanio.
Antonio agrees to Shylock's proposal so he can lend money to Bassanio.
In Shylock's household, his servant Launcelot plans to leave and work for Bassanio, and his daughter Jessica schemes to run away with Antonio's friend Lorenzo.
Jessica disguises herself and escapes through the streets of Venice with Lorenzo. Bassanio and Gratiano leave for Belmont.
The Prince of Morocco visits Portia who has attempted to marry her. He chooses the gold casket, which is proven to be incorrect.
