Doodle is born with a shriveled body and looks like an old man. No one thought that he would live. Even his family, who built a small coffin for him.
I'm sorry, Doodle will not make it...
Brother was sitting with Doodle one afternoon. Doodle looked straight at him and smiled.
Mama! He smiled, he's all there!
Brother had been teaching Doodle to walk, so on Doodle's 6th birthday he showed his parents. Mama and Dad cried and ran over to him, hugging him.
Doodle can walk!
The family saw a Scarlet Ibis in their tree. The Ibis fell onto the ground and was dead. Doodle grabbed string and wrapped it around the bird's neck. Doodle dug a hole and buried the bird.
Brother wanted Doodle to be like all the other boys so he made Doodle row against the tide. Doodle was both tired and frightened, and when he stepped off the boat he collapsed in the mud.
Don't you want to be like the other boys at school?
On their way home Brother ran ahead of Doodle out of pride. He came back for Doodle and found him limp on the ground. He had been bleeding from the mouth. Brother lay next to him holding his fallen Scarlet Ibis.
