Lieutenant Jimmy Cross grieves the death of Ted Lavender and for the first time in the book he becomes the leader the men need him to be.
Kiowa was a good friend to the author, his death was tragic and was symbolic in showing the harsh cruelty of the war.
Here in My Khe the narrator tells a story about how he thinks he killed a young Vietnamese soldier, this moment in the book was very meaningful and symbolic to the guilt men felt in the war.
From the story "The Things They Carried" the story is the epitome of tragedy in war. Good men lost their life to free other and this war not only took men from their family but it brought them back in ruins.
