  • John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. He was the third child of Olive Hamilton and John Ernst Steinbeck. He had two older sisters, Esther and Beth, and a younger sister, Mary.

  • John grew up in a Victorian home that still stands to this day. The little towns around him and the landscape he grew up in impacted his writing style. At the age of 14 he decided to become a writer. He would lock himself in his bedroom to write poems and short stories.

  • Steinbeck enrolled at Stanford University in 1919. He did this to sharpen his writing skills. John took courses such as creative writing and world history.
  • After college, he moved to New York city where he became a construction worker and a newspaper reporter. Later on, he found California was more fitted to his lifestyle and returned home where he became a caretaker.

  • In 1929, he wrote his first book, "Cup of Gold" and he married Carol Henning. After many successful novels, including "Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men". He also served as a war correspondent during World War II.

  • In 1962 he received the Nobel Prize for literature. John Steinbeck died in New York City of heart disease on December 20, 1968. He was a very successful author and left many impacts on the world of literature.
