Neither Billy or Ila Mae believed in keeping slaves, so Billy did not want to fight for the Confederacy. But Abram was a member of the town's guard, and he showed up with the regiment one day, and dragged Billy away against his will. Ila Mae would never see him again, and he would get killed just a week before the war was over.
Now known as Hennie Comfort, she and Jake were very happy together, raising their daughter Mae. The only sad times were when Hennie had a baby too early or when Jake had bad memories from the Civil War. Unfortunately, Jake died in a mine cave-in when he was just 60 years old, leaving Hennie a widow again in her early 50's.
