My name is Ruth Elizabeth Dahl. I was born into an orthodox Jewish family in Geilenkirchen, Germany on May 30, 1922.
My dad, Isador, was a castle dealer and my mom, Sophia, took care of our home. I also have two older siblings named Edith and Carl.
As things were going downhill, it got worse when the German troops invaded Europe in 1940. And in 1942, the Nazis began rounding up Jews like myself. My maternal aunts were taken yo the Auschwitz killing center when they were killed. I was petrified as my parents and went into hiding and I was forced to spend two years moving from one refuge to another .
When the Nazis came to power, my life changed. No one helped me or my Jewish neighbors. Then in 1938 my fathers business was forced to be closed.
When the war was over I learned that my Brother had died in the death march, which was very sad. But my life began going uphill after that. First I immigrated to the United States. Then, I got married to the love of my life. And last, I had 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren.
But, in 1944, Allied troops entered the Netherlands and I was able to come out of hiding. And even better, I returned to Valkenburg and reunited with my parents!
