  • We cannot just go on watching the environment go to ruin.  We have to do something about it.  Company's that create energy by burning fossil fuels are either trying to stop using fossil fuels especially coal, or removing some of the sulfur from the coal before burning it.  However,  company's are struggling to reduce the amount of nitrogen gas let off.  There is only one of reducing this as it is created when the coal is burning.  This way is to burn the coal in another way.  Cars are also another major creator of pollutants.  One car alone does not produce a lot of pollution but all the cars on the road produce  A LOT.  So car manufacturers are making hybrid and electric cars to reduce the omissions.
  • Well, acid rain is rain with acid in.  It is caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal.  The gas that is left after burning (sulfur) mixes with the water vapor in the air and creates sulfuric acid.  Then when it rain it is acid rain.  The pH of acid rain is about 4.3
  • Canada suffers badly the effects of acid rain.  Eastern Canada suffer a lot from acid rain because a large amount of the waters around that region lack natural alkalinity.  This means that they cannot neutralise the acid naturally.  a lot of the ground around there is susceptible hard rock such as granite and this neither can naturally neutralise the acid.
  • The worst effects are to rivers, streams and lakes.  When the acid rains fall onto the water it makes that water so acidic that is absorbs the aluminium from the soil/sand and releases it in the water.  This makes the water dangerous for animals to drink because they cannot cope with the acidity.  The more acid rain then the more aluminium that is released.  If you look on the board you will see a diagram of how much acid different animals can manage with.  Another thing acid rain effects is statues and sculptures that are made of limestone or marble.  The acid would dissolve the stone.
  • You also have to consider the effects to the environment.  Acid Rain is very harmful to breeding because not only will it kill a lot of animals but the younger the animal the less tolerant it will be with acid rain.  If the acidity is higher than pH 5 then most fish will die.  Acid Rain does't only harm wildlife but also plants such as trees.  when acid rain falls it sucks a lot of the nutrients and mineral out of the soil, this means that the trees don't have enough to keep them alive.
