  • There's NO WAY that you, the ATHENIANS are going to win this battle!
  • Oh yeah, WE'LL SEE ABOUT THAT!
  • Hello, I'm Datis, leader of the Persians.
  • Hello, I'm Miltiades, leader of the Athenians.
  • The Battle of Marathon took place in the waters off the coast and they fought on land up on hills. In other words, this was a land AND sea battle.
  • Well, have fun trying because we're going to gain control over Greece.
  • The Battle of Marathon was a battle against the Persians and Athenians and lasted from August 490 B.C. and ended about two months later.
  • Dang it!
  • We won! The Athenians won!
  • The Athenian commander was Miltiades and the Persian commander was Datis. They were both very strong leaders.
  • The battle was fought because both empires wanted control over Greece and more territory.
  • In this battle, the Athenians won this huge battle.
  • Something unique and interesting about this battle is was the legend about it. The legend is that after Athens won, they sent a runner named Pheidippides home with the news. He raced nearly 25 miles. When he got to Athens he shouted “VICTORY!” and dropped dead. This legend is also how we got the name of the long race marathon.
