I rode a plane for the first time while traveling, with a group of 8 other people from my church, to Romania for a mission trip.
Our team had come up with a plan to have 2 separate Vacation Bible school type of activities for the Roma (gypsy), and Romanian children, where they would do the same activities.
We successfully went through our plan with Roma children, but we had to change everything for the Romanian children because they were older and more advanced.
I like to have a plan, be prepared, and follow the plan. I was in charge of the crafts, so I had to come up with a way to relate the same crafts to a new lesson.
I successfully came up with ideas for 2 lessons, but I didn't even know what the video they planned on showing for the 3rd lesson, so I couldn't figure out how to relate the craft (a black bird) to anything. I was panicking, but the people around me encouraged me and told me that it would be okay.
Finally, it was time for them to watch the video, and as it was playing, I got an idea of how to relate a black bird to the story. That ended up being my best lesson. I could tell the teens really related to it and were paying attention, and it was all because I learned to be flexible and was comfortable with the people around me. I felt a sense of belonging, both within my team and with the Romanians, and my character and faith grew as a result.
