The mayor didn't want to give a tree away for free. He told Annie that to get a tree, she has to get 100 signatures on a petition and bring it back to him in two days.
Annie was very sad when she came home because she thought there was no way she could get all those signatures. "Don't give up honey! You can do anything you set your mind to!" her mother encouraged.
Annie spent all day getting signatures, and she only had one house left, which belonged to a cranky granny. The granny said she wouldn't sign the petition but she would give Annie a fake tree to decorate if she came back the next day. Annie accepted the offer.
Annie came home and told her father about the fake tree and he was not pleased. He told Annie that by taking the fake tree she took the easy way out. Fighting for a real tree was honorable and more meaningful than just having something to decorate.
After talking with her father, Annie learned the real importance of trees. They make the oxygen that we breathe and are good for the planet. However because of pollution and greedy people, they're almost all gone!
The next day Annie went back to the cranky granny's house. She refused to leave until she got her signature on the petition. She finally had all 100 signatures!
