Hi, my name's Coal. I live in Colorado, North America. Nothing really happens here and it's always the same. That is until...
We rocks started to notice that the valley next to us was getting closer and closer. The other rocks said that the valley was on a different plate than us. I asked them what a plate was and they said it was a piece of the Earths crust or lithosphere. The crust is the layer of Earth on top of the mantle. They also said we were at a convergent boundary where two plates collide.
I started noticing that we kept rising and getting higher than the valley next to us. I thought that I was going crazy so I didn't say anything. One day my friend asked me if I had noticed that we were getting higher and I told her that I thought I was the only one who noticed. She said that she asked her mom why we were rising and her mom said that mountains form at convergent plate boundaries.
The convection currents in the mantle kept pushing our plate into the other plate and we kept bending upward into a peak. The convection currents are when the warm material in the mantle rises and the cool material sinks. You may still be wondering what the mantle is. Well, the mantle is the layer of the Earth between the crust and the outer core. It's almost like silly putty.
Eventually my home was transformed into the Rocky Mountains(named after the great rocks that live there of course). The view is the best from up here and you get used to the cold after a while. And maybe one day your home will become the next big mountain range.
