Scene: Lunch. Characters: Teacher, 4th Grader.
4th Grader is bored and pounds his apple into the floor. Teacher backs away from the student and listens to the student talk about his frustration with boredom.
Teacher tells him this action is not acceptable and that student will be cleaning up his mess and also the rest of the classroom. This method is called "Overcompensation". Not only does the student repair the damage he has caused...
...He also improves the situation, in this case, the classroom. Student complies without resetting the escalation cycle because the teacher has been consistent.
This method is used when restitution is needed. The restitution should always fit the crime.
This gives students a respect for the rules and an incentive to prevent them from repeating destructive actions.
