The author introduces Charlie when he had a test and he thinks that he failed it. Charlie is doing a bunch of tests to see if he is able to do the surgery that changes your intelligence and makes him 3 times smarter than he was.
Charlie races a very intelligent mouse named Algernon after he has his surgery. Charlie never beats Algernon and finally one day he beats Algernon eight times in a row.
Charlies teacher, Miss Kinnian and Charlie are very close in age, and Charlie is developing emotion as he becomes smarter. Charlie is in love with Miss Kinnian.
Algernon had bit Charlie and overall Algernon was just acting werid. A few days later Algernon had passed away. Charlie buried him in the back yard, and Charlie cried.
Charlie knows after Algernon dies that he is going to lose all of his intelligence so Charlie decides that he doesn't want anybody to see him this way. He says goodbye to all of his friends in his last progress report, and Charlie says to leave some flowers for Algernon.
