Tom realizes he cannot open the window from his current position. BANG. He hit the window with the palm of his hand but it rebounded. TINK, TINK, TINK. The half-dollar coin he had did nothing to the glass.
Tom uses the items he has in his pockets to attract attention, but it doesn't work. No one can hear his cries for help, either. Tom is stuck and his life is flashing before his eyes.
He is faced with the choice. His only option is to punch the window. If his force isn't hard enough, his fist will rebound and he'll fall. If he doesn't take the gamble, his legs will give out, and he'll fall anyways. It's his decision and fate to choose.
"...his elbow protruding over Lexington Avenue far below. He waited, feeling sick tenseness and terrible excitement building. It grew and swelled... Then with the full power... he shot his arm toward the glass and said, "CLARE!"
When Tom was finally inside, he decided to go after his wife and watch the features with her. Looking back into his apartment on his way out, he saw the yellow paper sail out the window into the night, and laughed.
