John Brown was a radical abolitionist who believed in the violent overthrow of the slavery system
During the Bleeding Kansas conflicts, Brown and his sons led attacks on pro-slavery residents. Murdering slave owners for this interests in slavery, most famously known as the Pottawatomie Massacre.
John Brown justified his actions as the will of god. Brown was seen as the hero in the eyes of the Northern extremists and was growing his reputation as an anit-slave leader.
He enlisted a small army whose mission was to spark a rebellion among the slaves. Brown and his followers attacked and occupied the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry. Few salves actually fought alongside Brown and the raid failed greatly.
Brown was found guilty of murder to salve owners, inciting violent slave uprising, and treason against the state of Virginia.
John Brown was an anti-slavery icon. He gave hope to slaves giving them a way to escape the harshness and cruelty of slavery.
