Food waste is often correlated with water waste. According to the World Resources Institute, 1.3 billon tons of food that is wasted worldwide each year cause 45 trillion gallons of water to also be wasted. 24% of all water that is consumed is for agriculture.
According to the United Nations World Water Assesment Program, over last 50 years, freshwater withdrawals have tripled, and the need for water is continuing to increase.
