Scout explains the Maycomb county and the civilians residing in it. Jem is dared to run up and touch the side of Boo Radleys house-an old man who never leaves his home-, to which he complies
It is Scouts first day of school. First she gets in trouble for knowing how to read, then for explaining Walter Cunningham's financial situation to the teacher.
Walter Cunningham has dinner at the Finch household. Scout is forced to be polite to him and is upset about it. Atticus and Scout make an agreement to continue reading but to keep it a secret
The children find gum and money in a tree trunk outside the Radley place. Dill comes back and they are bored so they role scout down a hill in a tyre. She crashes and falls out into the Radley's yard, quickly scrambling out to safety.
Scout and Ms Maudie discuss Boo Radley and his absence. The children then try to ask Boo to leave his house by inserting a letter into his shutters, which they fail at. Atticus tells the children off for exploiting Boo's privacy.
Jem tries to look inside the Radley house through the back window. Mr Radley fires his shotgun and jem loses his pants while running away. Jem later returns in the night to retrieve them.
