  • Free Nitrogen
  • Nitrogen is found everywhere in the air but not in the form we humans can use. Nitrogen fixation converts the nitrogen gas into ammonia.
  • Nitrification converts the ammonia into nitrite ions. Plants can now use the nitrite ions. Plants then excrete nitrogen-rich waste.
  • Decomposer bacteria convert the nitrogen-rich waste into simple compounds which then can be combined back into nitrogen gas. The free nitrogen can roam around the Earth until another plant repeats the cycle.
