Beowulf gathered twelve of the mightiest warriors with him to set sail to the kingdom of Herot to defeat the monster Grendel who had been terrifying the kingdom and drove out many of those who lived there.
As the brave warriors all slept through the dark and desolate night the infamous monster Grendel had been walking about the empty kingdom and was delighted when he came across the sleeping men all huddled away in their beds.
One by one Grendel the vicious monster had picked off and eaten the sleeping warriors who were unaware until it was too late. As he went to grab Beowulf, the warrior quickly grabbed Grendel by the arm.
Grendel was, for once, frightened for no man he had encountered before held such a strong grip let alone dared to touch the creature. Grendel struggled to free himself of Beowulf's mighty grasp but was unable. For once he had no thirst for blood or human flesh but longed to be in the safety and comfort of his cave.
Grendel tried to escape but Beowulf's grasp was too strong for him to overcome. As Grendel desperately tried to free Beowulf forcefully tugged at Grendel's arm and tore it off his body. Holding Grendel's detached limb Beowulf seized after him but Grendel had already started to retreat to his cave where he felt he could be safe from the mighty warrior.
Grendel, now defeated had returned to his desolate dark cave. He knew he had lost the fight and slowly began to fade out of consciousness. There was a large puddle of blood that had spilt out of the socket of where his arm used to be.
