Matilde is depressed, "She suffered constantly, feeling that all the attributes of a gracious life, every luxury, should be hers." (pg. 333)
She gets invitation, " There's something for you." said her husband (pg. 334). It was an invitation to a ball and gave Matilde an opportunity for a fairytale.
They go to the ball, " The day of the party arrived. Madame Loisel [ Matilde ] was a great success. She was the prettiest women there." (pg. 336)
Matilde loses a very expensive necklace that she borrowed from her friend for the dance, "The...the...necklace...it's...gone." (pg. 339)
Matilde spend the next 12 years of her life trying to pay off the necklace, "Madame Loisel came to know the awful life of poverty-stricken...the crushing debt had to be paid." (pg. 340)
Matilde finds out that the necklace was a fake and that the past 12 years of her life were needless, "Oh my poor Matilde, the necklace was a fake." (pg. 342)
