pandoras box caused many problems. Zeus looked down on earth and saw riots, murders and war. even though he loaded Pandora's box with all these terrible things. He was determined to punish these humans.
Zeus decided man had to go, so he ordered a flood. everyone drowned except two people. king Deucalion and his wife pyrrha.
some say it was god Prometheus who warned king Deucalion, as king Deucalion is prometheus's son and it was well known that Prometheus had a kind heart. king Deucalion knew his father could see into the future. so when he told him to build a sturdy boat before the waters will rise, he did.
prometheus also told king Deucalion that when the floods came he must "throw the bones of the great mother over his shoulder. King Deucalion didn't know what this meant at the time.
As Prometheus predicted the flood did come King Deucalion and his wife sailed away safely for 9 days and 9 nights. When the waters finally receded the two were left on the tallest peck in Greece, the very top of Mt Parnassus.
king Deucalion thought hard about what his father had said to him. "throw the bones of the great mother over his shoulder." he mumbled to himself until he got it. the earth is the great mother and her bones must be stones! so King Deucalion threw some stones over his shoulder and they turned into men. His wife, Pyrrha did the same and her stones turned into women. many stones later and race had started again.
