HI! My name is Wally the Water Molecule. I will be telling you the story of the time where I was sucked up into the Woodstock Water treatment Facility and ended up at the Huron Park water fountain.
I am now being pumped to the treatment plant. But first, I have to go through the screening process to separate the good water molecules from the bad debris and particles. I do this by going through a set of screens.
Next, I and my fellow molecules undergo 3 different processes: coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation. Coagulation is where chemicals are rapidly mixed with the water so that the small particles clump together. Next, I'll undergo the flocculation prosses where I will be gently mixed to form a fluffy precipitate. Finally, I will go to the sedimentation tank so all the bad particles will be pulled down to the bottom of the tank by the slowly sinking precipitation called a floc.
Hey there, Walley again. Before we get moving through the treatment process, I want to talk about the 3 main sources of Contaminants. One main source of biological waste in water comes from livestock waste. This problem is dealt with in the next stage of the prosses. The biggest contributor to chemical contaminants is the leachate from landfills that can carry harmful chemicals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. It is very important to remove these harmful metals because there is a very small maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) for them. For example, the MAC of mercury is 0.001 parts per million. Finally, the biggest contributor to physical particles in water is land runoff and erosion. These small particles were just recently filtered in the last stage.
We have now arrived at the most important stage in the treatment process, the disinfection stage!!! Here chlorine is added to kill those pesky microorganisms. There are many kinds of technology used for disinfecting the raw water such as chlorination and micro filtration. The destruction of disease-causing organisms is the most important step in the treatment prosses.
Welcome to the aeration stage. Here is where other substances such as ozone, oxygen, ammonia, chlorine dioxide, or potassium permanganate are mixed in with the water to further reduce taste and colour problems in the final product. The next stage is my personal favourite because it is where I like to go to get my watery skin feeling nice and soft again.
