Socs vs Greasers
Yes Darry does challenge Ponyboy. He challenges him to do his homework, to be home on time, not to stay out late and being really harsh on him if he does stay out to late or if he doesn't do well in school . Darry also challenges him to work hard at anything. Ponyboy grows from this by listening to Darry and he does all his homework and things that Darry wants him to do. From Darry being really harsh Ponyboy becomes a tough person and stands up for himself when he yells back at Darry.
Ponyboy does not feel comfortable at this place. The reason why is because this is the place where he almost drowned and where Johnny killed Bob and now Johnny is dead. Since he has these bad memories he doesn't feel comfortable and safe because this is the place where he almost died and where bad things happened. Back then this used to be a nice place for him until those things happened. He used to feel comfortable here but now he doesn't because of those bad memories.
The conflict between the Greasers and the Socs is not really a choice for Ponyboy. The Socs don't like the Greasers and Ponyboy can't control the Socs to like the Greasers so this conflict is out of his hands. Yes it does Impact how Pony feels about it because naturally for him the Socs hate him and since the Socs hate him he makes himself hate the Socs too. Sometimes he fights them but he does not like to get jumped by them so in the end he doesnt like the conflict. If he has to though he fights them.
