  • What is the difference between sex and gender?
  • Are men and women equal?
  • What is sexism?
  • Hey honey, can you get those files on my desk right away? Oh and did you hear the joke about the dumb blonde...?
  • Our sex refers to the biological differences we are born with. These include or sexual organs and our hormones. Gender is the social construct of male and female. It is what society defines as being feminine or masculine.

  • Men and women are not equal. Men have many opportunities available to them that aren't for women. Studies indicate that on average men make more money than women. Men are considered to be more dominant. Men and women often fall into specific gender roles. Like the man as the provider and the woman is expected to care for the children

  • Sexism is discriminatory practices against a certain sex. It happens to women more often than men. Sexism can sometimes be hard to identify.

  • There is the part in the book where Jem is having a discussion with Atticus about how unfair Tom Robinson's trial was. Jem notices that the jury is made up of all men from out in the woods
  • Jem asks Atticus "why people like us and Miss Maudie don't sit on juries?" Atticus responds that "Miss Maudie can't serve on a jury because she is a women" Women don't have the same rights as men during this time. This is an example of blatant sexism.
  • Scout was appalled that women can't serve on a jury. Atticus explains that it may be to protect the "frail ladies" from sordid cases. Atticus jokes that the ladies would be interrupting the court case anyways. Saying that women are frail and that they like to interrupt is a gender stereotype
