Siget Where Elie lived with his family before they were taken to Auschwitz and Birkenau.
Train The Jews were transported from Siget and other cities to the concentration camps. They called it cattle transportation because they were so crowded.
The first stop was Birkenau, the death camp. Men and women were speperated here, Elie never saw his mother or one of his sisters again.
Next Elie and his father are taken to Aschwitz then to Buna, a work camp. Elie works in a factory with other inmates.
In Buna Elie and the other inmates witnessed the hanging of some men and a child. The hanging of the child showed that the Nazis were ruthless and showed no mercy for anyone. This experience was scaring for Elie.
At the end of the book Elie and the rest of the inmates are taken from Buna to a different concentration camp because the Russia army is going to liberate the Jews.
