  • Nationalism
  • A system of alliances divided Europe into two camps. The goal was to create peace but it caused conflict in an argument between countries. There were two alliances, The Triple Alliance , Germany, Austria and Italy and Triple Entente, Britain, France, and Russia.
  • This was an "army race" because Britain had a larger navy, Germany wanted one too. Germany and France competed to build larger armies. The more one nation built up its navy, the others felt they had to do the same.
  • A pride to one's country, belief that one's own nation and culture is superior to others, it led European nations to compete to build the largest navy. It also gave groups the idea of forming independent nations. People under the rule of Ottoman empires wanted freedom from "foreign" rule.
