They mainly focused on growing maize and legumes, however; it did not rain often so watering their crops was always a struggle.
They used dams and canals to try to collect the rain water that fell at times.
However, their efforts were no match for the 14 year drought

Many crops died and the dams ran out of water. It became impossible to grow enough food to support the population.
famine ran through Pueblo Bonito and the Anasazi was no more.
