  • Mathilde Loisel was a woman living in middle class and dreamed of wearing expensive dresses and living a luxurious life. She wanted to be envied for her wealth that she could never have.
  • Climax
  • Her husband knew of her despair, and got her an invitation to an exclusive ball. She buys a dress with money they were saving, and borrows a necklace from her friend, Madame Forestier.
  • Falling Action
  • When she arrives at the ball, everyone notices her. She is living in a dream. Everyone wants to dance with her. At the end of the ball, her husband gives her a shawl, but it is not wealthy like the other clothing she has, and this upsets her.
  • Resolution
  • She rushes home, and discovers the necklace is missing. Her husband goes out and looks for it, but it cannot be found.
  • Mathilde finds an almost identical necklace for 36,000 francs. Loisel gains this amount by borrowing money from many people. These payments must be honored, and the couple works for ten years to pay the people back.
  • After Mathilde finally pays back the debt , she runs into Madame Forestier, and she barely recognizes Mathilde. Mathilde tells her of the necklace, but Madame Forestier tells her that the original was a fake, and was only worth 500 francs.
