  • According to the notes in Al Capone Does my Shirts "The Families of most of the guards and and prison administrators lived on the island. Between 50 and 60 families resided on Alcatraz at any given time. Nine babies were born to mothers who lived on the island and some children lived their entire life on the island."
  • The popular sport for most of the prison's history was softball, which was played on a small, dirt diamond on the north end of the yard, facing the Golden Gate Bridge, with six-man teams: a pitcher, catcher, three basemen and an outfielder. Home runs over the wall were automatic outs. According to the notes in Al Capone does my shirts (page 221) "The kids who lived on the island did, in fact, collect convict baseballs."
