The man goes fishing at night alone because he feels it is missing from his 20th century life
While casting he see two ripples appear, his hubris kicks in and he goes for both. Split second later a manta ray jumps out and drags him into the ocean
After thinking about imminent death, his mind changes to his wife sitting at home awaiting his return
While he has had fantasies about porpoises being his friend, one comes by and hits the manta ray which buys him time to try to get off the rope
Last ditch effort in saving his life, he breaks the rope on barnacles and is freed.
He comes to the surface "never again will I go casting alone at night" and throws the mullet back
