  • Khanbaliq is the capital of Kublai's empire. It was known for its wide streets, beautiful palaces, and fine homes.
  • Marco Polo
  • That is a fascinating story Marco!
  • Kublai Khan started the Yuan Dynasty. Yuan means beginning and it meant the Mongols wanted to rule for a long time. The Mongols were very different than the Chinese and did not mix with them. They ruled a strong empire for 100 years.
  • Mongol Trade
  • Ok, in return we want more tea.
  • We need more cotton.
  • The Mongols let the scholar-officials keep their jobs. But, Kublai Khan gave Mongol leaders the top jobs in China's government. In 1313 a decree required four major texts of Confucian were to be used in all imperial examinations.
  • Marco Polo came from Venice, Italy. Kublai Khan was fascinated by Marco Polo and became friends with him. Polo enjoyed a special status in China and ruled the city of Yangchow. He was sent on fact-finding and business trips. When he returned to Venice, he wrote a book of his adventures.
  • The Mongols prospered from increases overland trade. They traded tea, silk, porcelain in return for silver, spices, carpets, and cotton. Europeans and Muslims also discovered new inventions. This helped spread China's ideas.
