Cook Coffee House
by Lillie Carrico
A girl that takes us through the tradgey and despair of an epidemic that wiped out almost an entire cpatial. Where she care, cathces, and saves not onky herself but many others from the diesease yellow fever. Her name is none other than Matilda Cook, also known as Mattie. Mattie is a very independant determined, stubborn, doubtful, and independant young woman who's life events stray far from simple.
Mattie is very determined throughout the entire book to reach one goal. Mattie's goal is to one day run the coffeehosue the way she wants to and make it sucessful. In teh book it says "I imagined Mother's face when she arrived home and found what a splendid job I had done running the coffeehouse. I could just picture it" After she jsut recovered from the deathly yellow fever she was still determined to run the coffeehouse.
Mattie is also a very stubborn girl. She is very consisten on not leaving her mother even though she is deathly ill. Mattie will not budge until she is forced and has nmore say on what she does. IN teh book it says ""No!" I stamped my foot on the floor. "You can't send me away! I need to be here-I need to help! You can't send me away!" This fragment from thw novel gives you an insite on how Mattie was very stuborn.
Matilda was a very very independant girl thorughout her whole life. She decided she didn't need lots of people to help her and didn't take help unless extremley nessacasry. SHe also loved to give orders to anyone that would let her. The book says "A scullery maid? Ridiculous. I was Matilda Cook, daughter of Lucille, grandaughter of Captin William Fransworth Cook, of the Pennsylvania Fifth Regiment. I could read, write and figure numbers faster than most. I was not afriad of hard work. I would set my own course." This helps us see into Mattie's independant mindset.
In conclusion, Mattie or Matilda was a great person with a kind heart but like everyon had flaws that got in the way. She tried to be kind but knew how to lay down the law when it was needed, like her mother. Overall Mattie was great girl who grew into an even great woman. Also if she was real she would be someone that I myself would admire.
