Storyboard Text

  • It is ironic that when they first heard the news about the German soldiers the Jews were not worried. No one had expected the Holocaust to be the largest genocide in world history.
  • Yet we were still not worried.
  • Elie began to hate the Nazi soldiers when he realized that they were not there to help him. They were his oppressors. This is the epiphany that Elie and many other Jews had in the early stages of the Holocaust.
  • That's when I started to hate them, and my hatred remains our only link today.
  • It is hard to believe that humans could be so cruel to other humans and feel no sympathy. Part of the reason that Jews had such a difficult time accepting what was occurring was because of this.
  • Was I still alive? Was I awake? How is it possible that men, women, and children were being burned and the world kept silent?
  • Many people had completely given up even in the early stages of the Holocaust. They had felt hopeless and weak, physically and emotionally.
  • The instincts of self- preservation, of self- defense, of pride, had all deserted us.
  • I too had become a different person. The child I was, had been consumed by the flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me.
  • The Holocaust left people in pieces and they had completely lost themselves. Elie experienced this first hand as he left that he was no longer the person he had been before the Holocaust.
  • At the end of the book, Elie realizes that he has been himself the whole time yet he was consumed by the distress and that the Holocaust had given him, however he was still himself.
  • From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me.
