Charlemagne almost doubled the territory under his control. He now ruled, no longer a mere kingdom, but an actual empire
Pope Leo III saw this and made him formally named Charlemagne Emperor. Crowning of Charlemagne was surprising.
Charlemagne, Old French for Charles the Great. Name proved accurate, Charlemagne a great leader. Historically considered one of most important leaders in European history. He also was a foundation of success, his military power.
Upon Charlemagne's death, his empire fell apart. Charlemagne's heirs, lacked his ability as ruler and warrior.
The heirs were unable to maintain the unity of the empire. His three grandsons waged civil war against one another. Trying to get full control but no one was successful.
